Humanitarian action annual report 2023
This report presents key results achieved by UN Women’s Humanitarian Action Section in close collaboration with partners, including local women’s organizations, across crisis and displacement contexts in 2023. Against the backdrop of increasing conflicts, violence, and climate-related disasters, the report captures UN Women’s efforts and impacts at the global, regional, and country levels in advancing gender equality and the empowerment of crisis-affected women and girls.
Today, approximately 150 million women and girls are in need of humanitarian assistance worldwide. From the State of Palestine to Ukraine, Sudan, and Afghanistan, the numbers are going up as geopolitical conflicts, climate change, health, and food crises intensify. In fragile contexts, women and girls are more vulnerable to crises and shocks. UN Women identifies and addresses the specific needs of crisis-affected and displaced women and girls with all their diversity. In 2023, UN Women responded to the needs and priorities of crisis-affected women and girls in 56 countries.
This report outlines the achievements of UN Women’s humanitarian work in different areas—coordination, service delivery, localization efforts, and partnerships—and showcases examples of how this work impacts on the UN-led humanitarian coordination mechanism, local women’s organizations, communities, and crisis-affected women and girls.
UN Women is grateful to the donors, UN agencies, and civil society partners acknowledged in the report, especially local women’s organizations, for their strong support in advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in some of the world’s most challenging settings.
