Media has a huge impact on violence against women and girls. Media can reinforce and normalize harmful gender stereotypes. But media can also be a powerful tool for raising awareness, challenging societal norms, and promoting positive change.

How media can be used to prevent violence

Leveraging media in preventing violence is key to raising awareness about gender equality by amplifying anti-violence messaging in media. Pushing for rules and regulations that give women more access to media is also essential, as is ensuring that everyone can use new technology fairly. This includes teaching people to understand media better by improving media literacy. Additionally, it is crucial to portray women in media without using stereotypes. By showcasing diverse and realistic representations of women, media can challenge harmful gender norms and promote positive role models, further contributing to the prevention of gender-based violence.

Changing how institutions work with the media

To promote gender equality and ensure fair representation in the media, institutions can take several key steps. First, conducting gender assessments helps identify biases and areas for improvement. Next, developing new policies and revising existing ones on how women and girls are portrayed and represented in media is crucial. Ensuring that both women and men are in decision-making roles by achieving gender parity in staffing is also important. Additionally, it is essential to ensure the safety of women journalists. Finally, encouraging a shift in attitudes, behaviors, and social norms through media campaigns, educational content, and by challenging stereotypes can create a more inclusive and equitable media landscape.
