Men and boys play an essential role in ending violence against women and girls. Evidence and experience have shown that engaging men and boys in efforts to prevent violence against women and girls is crucial. Changing social norms and unequal gender relations is critical in ending gender-based violence and men and boys play a pivotal role in supporting these changes.

Ways to empower men and boys in preventing violence

Workshops to raise awareness and build skills

Group-based workshops provide safe spaces for men and boys to reflect on the causes and consequences of violence against women. These sessions encourage open dialogue, raise awareness, and teach practical skills for preventing violence, helping participants to take accountability and act as agents of change.

Community engagement

Another approach involves drawing men and boys into activities and community initiatives—such as sports, faith-based gatherings, or digital campaigns—can foster positive engagement. These initiatives empower men to act as allies and positive role models, reinforcing messages of respect and equality in everyday interactions.

Policy and legal advocacy

Finally, engaging men in policy and legal development due to the significant power and influence they hold is critical to achieving gender equality. This includes advocating for the criminalization of violence, strengthening workplace sexual harassment policies, and ensuring enforcement of gender-equal legislation. Their involvement amplifies the collective effort to prevent violence at structural and societal levels.

Engaging men and boys as allies in these ways strengthens the movement to end gender-based violence and ensures a safer, more equitable future for all.
